Wildlife warrior Robert Irwin wins major nature photography award
Robert Irwin has won the Natural History Museum’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year People’s Choice Award with a dramatic drone shot of a bushfire.
The photograph, taken by the teenage son of Australia’s beloved crocodile hunter, shows a fire raging near the border of the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve in Cape York, Queensland.
More than 55,000 votes were cast in the global competition, which recognises a photo chosen by the public each year as part of the Natural History Museum’s annual awards.
Irwin, who is most well known for his work at Australia Zoo and as the star of Animal Planet reality TV show ‘Crikey! It’s the Irwins’, is a keen photographer.
He often documents his work on his Instagram account, @RobertIrwinPhotography.
In a statement, the 17-year-old said he was “incredibly excited” to win the award.
“I feel it is particularly special for this image to be awarded, not only as a profound personal honour but also as a reminder of our effect on the natural world and our responsibility to care for it,” he said.
On Twitter, the wildlife warrior’s pregnant sister Bindi Irwin said she was “so proud” of her little brother.
More than 49,000 images from around the global were submitted for the annual competition, with snaps by Robert and four other photographers standing out as favourites.
The five images will be displayed in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition when the Natural History Museum in London reopens.
